Youngest Chess Grandmasters

The 20 youngest in history, India's youngest, every record holder since 1950 and the youngest world champions

Abhimanyu Mishra of the United States is the youngest chess grandmaster in history: he qualified for the title on 30 June 2021, aged 12 years, 4 months and 25 days. Faustino Oro of Argentina came within two months of that age in May 2026. India has more players among the youngest grandmasters than any other country, led by D Gukesh in fourth place.

Who is the youngest chess grandmaster?

Abhimanyu Mishra is the youngest player ever to qualify for the grandmaster (GM) title. On 30 June 2021, in the last round of the Vezerkepzo GM Mix in Budapest, he beat grandmaster Leon Luke Mendonca of India with the black pieces, finished on 7/9 and completed his third and final norm, a tournament result at grandmaster level. He was 12 years, 4 months and 25 days old. Earlier that month he had passed 2500, the rating the title also needs. FIDE and US Chess reported the record the same day.

The record he broke belonged to Sergey Karjakin, who qualified in 2002 at 12 years and 7 months. Mishra was about 66 days younger, and Karjakin's mark had stood for 19 years.

Mishra was born on 5 February 2009, comes from Englishtown, New Jersey, and is rated 2630 on the FIDE standard list for September 2026. On 8 September 2025, at 16, he beat world champion D Gukesh at the FIDE Grand Swiss, which made him the youngest player ever to beat a reigning world champion in a classical game; he finished fifth there, unbeaten on 7/11. In April 2026 he scored 7.5/9 in consecutive open tournaments in Alicante and Menorca, tied for first in both and won Menorca on tiebreak. In the 2026 Global Chess League he plays the Prodigy board for the PBG Alaskan Knights; his season is on his Global Chess League player page. In October 2026 he plays the US Chess Championship in Saint Louis again, on a wildcard.

The record nearly fell in 2026. Faustino Oro of Argentina, born in Buenos Aires on 14 October 2013 and often called "the Messi of chess", was within reach of it at the Aeroflot Open 2026 but lost a crucial final-round game. He completed his last norm on 10 May 2026 at the Sardinia International Chess Festival, with a win over Bartlomiej Niedbala in round 8, and finished 16th on 6/9. He was 12 years, 6 months and 26 days old: about two months older than Mishra had been and a few days younger than Karjakin, which puts him second on the all-time list. FIDE approved the title at its second Council meeting of 2026, and Oro is rated 2537 on the September 2026 list.

How the record fell, 1950 to 2026

FIDE first awarded the grandmaster title in 1950, and David Bronstein, at 26, was the youngest of that first group. The record has changed hands ten times since. Bobby Fischer's mark of 1958 lasted longest, 33 years, until Judit Polgar beat it in 1991; Karjakin's lasted 19 years.

Polgar is the only woman to have held the overall record, and her career is the subject of Queen of Chess, a 2026 Netflix documentary in our guide to the best chess movies. Ruslan Ponomariov, who took the record in 1997, won FIDE's knockout world championship in 2002 at 18.

Youngest female grandmasters

Hou Yifan of China is the youngest woman to earn the grandmaster title. She qualified in 2008 at 14 years, 6 months and 16 days and is 30th on the all-time list. She took the record from Koneru Humpy of India, who qualified in 2002 at 15 years, 1 month and 27 days. Humpy had taken it from Judit Polgar, who qualified in 1991 at 15 years, 4 months and 28 days, about a month younger than Fischer had been.

No woman has beaten Hou's age since. Divya Deshmukh of India earned the title in 2025 at 19, and Alice Lee of the USA earned her first grandmaster norm in 2026. Bodhana Sivanandan of England, born in 2015, became the youngest girl ever to score an international master norm at the Dole Open in France in July 2026, where she also became the youngest girl known to beat a 2600-rated player in a classical game.

Four Indian women had earned the title by July 2025: Humpy in 2002 at 15, Harika Dronavalli in 2011 at 19, Vaishali Rameshbabu on 1 December 2023 at 22, and Divya Deshmukh on 28 July 2025 at 19. Divya earned it by winning the 2025 Women's World Cup, one of the events that give the title directly; she had no grandmaster norm before it. Vaishali won the 2026 Women's Candidates, which earned her a title match against Ju Wenjun: the Women's World Chess Championship 2026.

Youngest world chess champions

D Gukesh of India is the youngest world chess champion. He won the title on 12 December 2024 in Singapore, aged 18 years and 197 days, when he beat Ding Liren in game 14 of their match to win 7.5-6.5. The record he broke was Garry Kasparov's: 22 years and 210 days on 9 November 1985, a mark that had stood for 39 years.

Garry Kasparov198522 years, 210 days
Magnus Carlsen201322 years, 357 days

Gukesh and Carlsen are so far the only players from the top 10 of the youngest-grandmaster list to become world champion. Ponomariov, 19th on that list, won FIDE's knockout world championship in 2002 at 18 years, 3 months and 12 days, younger than Gukesh, but at a time when the world title was split in two. That is why sources call Gukesh the youngest undisputed champion.

The youngest women's world champion is Hou Yifan, who beat Ruan Lufei on 24 December 2010 in Hatay, Turkey, at 16 years and 300 days.

How a player becomes a grandmaster

FIDE, the world chess federation, awards the title under its Title Regulations, in the version that applies from 1 January 2024. The usual path has two parts, and a few results skip it:

  1. 1.Norms: grandmaster-level results over at least 27 games in total, normally in events of at least nine games. Each norm needs a performance rating of 2600 or more, which is the rating that the player's results in that event are worth, against opponents with an average rating of at least 2380. At least half of the opponents must hold a title, at least a third of them (and at least three) must be grandmasters, and at least two federations other than the player's own must be in the field.
  2. 2.Rating: a FIDE standard rating of at least 2500. A rating that reaches 2500 in the middle of an event also counts.
  3. 3.Direct titles: some results give the title at once. Under FIDE's 2026 table, reaching the last 16 of the World Cup does, and so does winning the Women's World Cup.

For age records, the date that counts is the later of the two: the day of the last norm or the day the player reached 2500. That is why Mishra's age is counted to 30 June 2021, the day of his last norm, although FIDE confirms each title later at a Council meeting. The title is rare: FIDE counted 1,722 holders in October 2020.

Chess prodigies chasing the records

A chess prodigy is a child who plays far above the level of their age. These young players hold the other age records in 2026.

  1. 1.Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus of Turkey, born on 3 June 2011, became a grandmaster at 12 years, 9 months and 29 days on 1 April 2024, and is the youngest player to reach 2600 and 2700 in FIDE classical ratings. He hit a live rating of 2704 on 16 April 2026, aged 14 years, 10 months and 13 days, and leads the junior list on 2716 in September 2026.
  2. 2.Roman Shogdzhiev of Russia is the youngest international master in history. He completed the title on 25 May 2025, aged 10 years, 3 months and 21 days, with 7/9 at the RadnickiChess May IM tournament in Belgrade.
  3. 3.Ashwath Kaushik of Singapore is the youngest player to beat a grandmaster in a classical rated game. He was 8 years, 6 months and 11 days old when he beat Jacek Stopa of Poland in round four of the Burgdorfer Stadthaus Open in Switzerland on 18 February 2024.
  4. 4.Sarwagya Singh Kushwaha of India is the youngest FIDE-rated player in history. Reuters reported on 4 December 2025 that he got his rating at 3 years, 7 months and 20 days.

In the FIDE, Chess.com and ChessBase reports we checked in September 2026, Oro is the only player born in 2012 or later with a grandmaster norm. Erdogmus, Oro and Bodhana Sivanandan were all picked for the 2026 Chess Olympiad in Samarkand.
